I wrote to Lord Mandelson in May 2009 and received this reply(below) in October 2009 which was a little disappointing time wise, however it is a lengthy reply and at last answers my questions.
I was delighted to find that the Government are funding a two year project with the RSPO to review and improve the criteria of ‘sustainable palm oil’. This is very important, as we have found that the criteria currently in place by the RSPO is not sufficient. It has loopholes and does not properly address the issues of current ‘unsustainable plantations’ as these planations will Continue reading Reply from Defra regarding palm oil and Orangutan issues
Reply from Clarins on their palm oil useage
The reply from Clarins was dismal – it took nearly 4 months and a lot of pestering to get any reply at all, and when I did it was insufficient. I had already promised to use body shop products and use up the Clarins that I was using, and I am pleased to say that I have nearly used it all up now and definitely will not be buying anymore. Clarins are not members of the RSPO, which is not the be all and end all, but at least it is a token gesture, and they will not confirm if Continue reading Reply from Clarins on their palm oil useage

My UK campaign to stop Cadbury using Palm oil – lets follow Australia/New Zealand!
Australian and New Zealand people power has overcome Cadbury, who have decided to stop using palm oil in many products, due to the petitioning and campaigning of the Australians. This is wonderful news, but just a start in making a hole in the World’s unsustainable palm oil use.
I have had much communication with the people of Australia and New Zealand about Cadbury as I have info on my website too about Cadbury, and it shows that people power CAN work.
I, as you will know from my website, am currently petitioning to the EU Government for palm oil to be labelled in our Continue reading My UK campaign to stop Cadbury using Palm oil – let’s follow Australia/New Zealand!

Cadbury Australia/New Zealand take palm oil out of chocolate
How did they do it ? Read about how Australia and New Zealand did it below….
New Zealand information…..
The Cadbury’s NZ move was a collective effort with Auckland Zoo being a main player along with Judith Collins in Dunedin who is the producer for Orangutan Island on Animal Planet, instigated by Cadbury’s sudden decision to start putting palm oil in NZ chocolate (this very much Continue reading Cadbury Australia/New Zealand take palm oil out of chocolate!

reply from dept of energy & climate change
At the end of June 2009, I finally recieved this 3 page letter from the Department of Energy & Climate Change with regard to their commitments and efforts to save the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra and the unsustainable palm oil plantation situation.
Their reply is thorough in a sense, but it does not tell me much that I already didnt know – lots about the RSPO (roundtable of sustainable palm oil) and apparently our UK government have donated £600,000 to the GRASP Continue reading Reply from the Department of Energy & Climate Change re: Palm oil & Orangutans
Leading article: An oil shock we cannot ignore
There is no shortage of ways to measure the cost of palm oil. First there is the catastrophic impact on the wildlife of Malaysia and Indonesia, whose rainforests are being cleared to grow the crop. The habitat of endangered species, from orangutans to Sumatran tigers, is being torn down at a terrifying rate to make room for the fertile oil palms.

Palm oil and climate change
By James Turner, Greenpeace forests campaigner
Palm oil is an inescapable part of everyday life. As the new research from the Independent shows, it is now virtually impossible to avoid buying products that contain palm oil in every supermarket, chemist and sweet shop in Britain. Considering the fact that this commodity is now one of the most environmentally damaging on earth, this can seem like a gloomy prospect – but there are a few reasons for hope. Continue reading Palm oil and climate change

Seeing palm oil plantations
As we made our way to the Sepilok Jungle Resort, where we stayed that night, the guide showed us some palm kernels – the type which are being grown absolutely everywhere for its oil. Ok, they can make cooking oil, soap and lots of Continue reading Seeing palm oil plantations in Sabah, Borneo

palm oil - the facts copyright Sandra M Dean
How much do you know about palm oil and how it is killing the orangutans? We are not looking for a boycott of palm oil useage – just a campaign to stop the use of ‘unsustainable palm oil’ for products in our supermarkets and to make biofuels. Sustainable oil plantations are out there and are accessible, so lets do something about it!
