January 2007
Claire Chowney, 31, from Dovercourt, gave Chris Moyles a mouthful, when she called in to answer the Celebrity Tarzan competition on Radio 1.
The station called her back and asked her to guess the celebrity voice making a Tarzan call, live on the Show.
Chris Moyles made a few harmless jokes about Essex girls and mentioned Jade Goody, and Claire stood up for herself and told him ‘I come from Harwich - the gateway to Europe."
Afterwards, Claire received a call from the breakfast show team – they asked her to record a link for today's Star Pupil slot – so she may have got a new career out of her appearance!
2. ‘McDonalds’ Essex girl March 2007
Jade Hitchen, 11 years old, from Benfleet, entered a McDonald’s Worldwide competition, and won. The prize was to appear on the new packaging for McDonald’s and the entrants (13,000 of them) had to submit personal stories about what they love in 100 words or less. Jade wrote of her love for art, music and fashion and it won her a place (out of just 24 places) She was the only person picked from the UK. She had a shoot with top lifestyle photographer Nick Clements and enjoyed a fun-packed trip to London as part of her prize.

But Essex County Council leader Lord Hanningfield defended his female constituents writing to the paper "While I do not have my finger on the pulse of fashion as Esther Rantzen obviously does, I do know the stereotype of white stilettos being the traditional national costume of the Essex girl' is as outdated as shoulder-padded jackets."
He spoke of Boadicea, author Germaine Greer and actress Dame Helen Mirren as examples of women linked with Essex who have helped alter perceptions of the county's women.
Essex girl fills White House race with lurve May 20, 2007 An Essex girl may be the first lady with a tongue stud to have set her sights on the White House. A 6ft tall willowy redhead who has been compared to Arwen Evenstar, the Lord of the Rings character, she towers over her diminutive husband. “Who cares?” she said in an interview. “I like wearing high heels so I’m used to being taller than most men I stand next to.”
Nor is she bothered by their 31-year age difference. “I have never noticed it at all,” she said. “Dennis is a very mature but young-at-heart gentleman and we complement each other.”
